Punching Shear is a particular case of Shear which occurs in flat elements subjected to concentered loads.
Given the constrains imposed by regulations of the 70¬īs, Eng. Ara√ļjo Sobreira, with the collaboration of Eng. Jo√£o Maria Sobreira, have made about this subject who came to publish in 1983.
That time, these studies allowed to solve engineering problems that had no apparent solutions, particularly what regards to the asymmetrically punching shear in slabs supported on pillars, or supported by board or corner columns.
Sometimes, to confirm the safety of these elements it was carried out tests on site as was the case of the slab in and warehouse of Portucel (Paper Factory) in Viana do Castelo, designed to withstand an overload of 150 kN/m2 (Corresponding to three paper rolls stacked), with a mesh of columns separated 4,5x4,5m and a slab of 0,40m thickness.
